  • Go Packers

I have no delusions that the Packers are going on a Super Bowl run this year, our defense just isn’t that good. But what a game yesterday.

If you haven’t seen the game winning play, here’s the link to the amazing 4th and 8th throw.

And here’s an interesting graphic. Numberfire calculated each team’s likely playoff percentage each week. This chart pretty much sums up the Packer’s season.

  • Have a Drink

If you haven’t tried the NY Times dialect map online, check it out. It’s amusing. It tries to determine where you are from based on how you say words and which words you use for various terms.

As soon as it asked “What do you call the thing from which you might drink water in a school?” I knew it would nail where I am from. People from Milwaukee call it a bubbler. Everyone else looks at us funny when we say that.

After each question, it shows you a map indicating where that answer likely places you (red is likely, blue not so much). Most questions have gradual ranges of where it might put you. But here’s the bubbler answer map:

That red spot in the middle is Milwaukee and vicinity, drinking water at the bubbler…

  • Melt Ice With Cheese

You want to use provolone or mozzarella. Those have the best salt content.

    Only in Wisconsin

  • Best Photos of the Universe

Just click this link, from Bad Astronomy’s Phil Plait, which has every photo and be patient. It’s worth it. And if you haven’t seen the one video in the post (I blogged it a while back), just click the link. An actual astronaut covering Bowie’s Space Oddity from the International Space Station (with help from NASA), it’s insanely good.

  • Bragging

We had a NY/ Philly company holiday party today that started with bowling.

I’m not a bowler. I bowl once in a blue moon. But this was a fun group to bowl, hang out, and drink beer with.

First game I was lame. Broke 100, so not horrible, but barely. Second game I got in a groove.

Strike or spare in frames 2-9. I bowled a 186 (I am Fish below). More than 20 pins over my all time high. Crazy.

  • Even The Smithsonian Does Bad Science Reporting

There’s an article about how their totally silent anechoic chamber will drive anyone crazy after 45 minutes. How silence drives people bonkers.

Except the relevant data (the only data mentioned) referred to being in this chamber in the dark. So is it silence? Or silence and darkness combined?

    That’s a really big difference.

I’d expect that from pretty much any regular media, but the Smithsonian site? Really? Can anyone report science well?

  • No Such Thing as Socialsecurityandmedicare

This article makes an important point. Yes, it’s from Mother Jones, the publication that released the Romney video. And full disclosure, Mother Jones was delivered to my house pretty much my entire childhood due to my commie pinko parents.

But if you are worried that Social Security has a crazy mismatch of benefits paid vs. received, this is a good chart to consider.

    As the article points out:

Generally speaking, you’re always being conned when people talk about “entitlements.” That usually means Social Security and Medicare, but they’re very different things. Social Security is fine, and will stay fine with nothing more than tweaks. Medicare is a bigger problem, and it’s the one that needs the most attention.

    But that’s leftist propaganda…

  • Geek Humor

I missed this live, but apparently there was a tweet-fest with the hashtag #fivewordtechhorrors last night (and it seems to be still going on, click the link). Some great ones:

    The CEO wants FTP access

    Flash required to view content

    We’re rolling out Windows Vista

    It’s done, just needs testing

    Marketing department has an idea

    Developer jokes:

    It is all top priority

// not sure why this works

    It works on my machine

and as a bonus, my favorite:

    Math is not important

(if you don’t get it I can’t help you).
