I’ve often suspected this, but these days it seems any political issue is driven by that phrase. Wouldn’t it be good to have fewer Americans in prison? Apparently not…

Wall Street Journal to be even lamer on tech
Really, not sure how to draw any other conclusion from this. All Things D is a solid tech site and Walt Mossberg is a good tech writer. Both things are rare.

Redskins
I have no particular side in this debate. Overall it seems to me that calling an American Indian a “Redskin” is pretty obviously racist, but I know few American Indians. But to me a corporation gets to name itself anything (freedom of speech) and people get to react to that name, and say anything about that name that they want (also, freedom of speech).
I subscribed to Sports Illustrated for ages. I used to love Rick Reilly (would often skip to the back page to read him first). But that was a long time ago. Today I frankly consider a printed magazine a quaint concept and about half the time I when read Rick Reilly I roll my eyes.
If you have no idea what this is about, a few publications have decided that in this day and age the name “Redskins” is too racist so they will refer to the football team as “the football team from Washington DC”. This is pretty much a fringe movement, though it is growing slowly.
So if you are interested, first read this Grantland article. Then read Rick Reilly’s article. And then read this article.

The War for Talent
Seth Godin has an interesting take on this today. He feels it should be more of a search for attitude:
An organization filled with honest, motivated, connected, eager, learning, experimenting, ethical and driven people will always defeat the one that merely has talent. Every time.

The First Human
Not Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’s funniest comic, but if you are a tech geek and a dad (or mom), it hits home.

This comic apparently got so much reaction they are selling posters of it.

How to Advertise on a Porn Website
Eat24 is a food delivery website. That’s normal. But apparently their marketing plan is not totally normal (for the record, I do not use them).
Anyway, we like to do things differently around here. Very differently. When it comes to spreading our brand message, we usually take the road less travelled. This is one road we want to share with you, a road that took us where no marketing team has gone before. Well, at least not without clearing their browser history afterward.
They are a totally bootstrapped company so not swimming in ad cash. What to do?
PORN. Porn is the answer!
Honestly, we should’ve seen this one coming. Some of our heaviest users and biggest fans on social media just happen to be porn stars. Like, actual real-life porn stars
Enough teasing. Read the case study. And it really is a case study. Fascinating and hilarious and clearly NSFW.

Home Safe
It’s a bit crazy that this stuff is so routine that it isn’t even news. Yesterday three astronauts that had spent 6 months in the International Space Station returned home safely.
The picture is kind of cool.

Courtesy of the Bad Astronomy blog:
The picture above shows the moment of touchdown. The Russian Soyuz capsule has retrorockets that fire briefly to soften the landing, which was in a field in Kazakhstan.
Returning was one American and two Russians. Seriously, this is cool stuff and it doesn’t even make the papers. And we wonder why kids don’t want to be scientists?

Remembering
Another 9/11. I listened to some of the reading of names, as usual. I seem to listen at least enough to hear one of the names of our friends. Today I heard Scott Bart, the first in my old 9/11 post.
Following that Neil deGrasse Tyson video post, I started following him on Twitter. That lead me to his blog post on 9/12/2001. He lived four blocks from the World Trade Center and his account is gripping.
Today is a hazier day than that 9/11. Here’s the new World Trade Center as it stands today.

Scooter Time (and Theft)
School has started for my girls so that means Citi Bike goes away and I’m back to the scooter. I prefer biking, but when taking my girls to school the scooter works better.
But a couple of weeks ago, we had a bad city experience. Our nanny had taken the girls on a play date. The friend’s apartment was a new building in Brooklyn Heights. If you don’t know Brooklyn, that’s a really nice neighborhood. They had Danielle’s, Tori’s and my scooter (I think my nanny’s daughter Mia was riding mine). They told our nanny that leaving the scooters in the lobby would be fine.
Oops.
Two of the three scooter got stolen. Everyone was shocked. My nanny was horrified. She thought I’d be really mad. The parents offered to pay for our new scooters. But honestly, stuff happens. We’ve lived in Brooklyn forever and never dealt with theft. It’s a huge city. It happens.
The only good part was that of the three scooters, they took the two oldest (mine and Danielle’s). We had been talking about getting Danielle a new one anyway. Mine wasn’t that old, but I’m hard on scooters.
And the new Razor A5 comes in a cool blue. So Danny and I have new scooters. Tori is jealous.
I’m out a chunk of money which is no fun, but it’s all part of living in the big city. With how great our neighborhood is, one theft every 15 years is not that bad.
Now the only issue is that Tori always wants to ride my scooter…

Camouflage
Check out this video of octopus camouflage. It’s downright freaky. Sorry, but I can’t embed this video.
