  • Not The Onion

    Really, it’s not.

Iowa grants permits for blind residents to carry guns in public.

Sheriffs and advocates are divided on whether that’s a good idea.

    Divided. Really.

    Stevie Wonder:

Imagine me with a gun. It’s just crazy.

Seriously, this is not The Onion, or a spoof of any kind.

    Really.

  • Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson on UFOs

This is long at 11 minutes, but totally entertaining and just a great example of why he’s such a great science speaker. It’s a spontaneous response to a question from the audience and he goes off on the fallacy of Argument from Ignorance, the problems of eye witness testimony, lack of evidence, and finally a complete disdain for any alien culture that crash lands in Roswell.

Don’t tell me you came across the galaxy and you can’t land on earth. Go home, bring me someone who can.

  • Conformity

For anyone who practiced music with a metronome, watch 32 different metronomes sync up by themselves in 4 minutes.

    The physics are actually fascinating.

  • Citi Bike Art Ride

Check out their blog. The building right behind the Pearl Street Triangle Painting is my office.

It’s an old picture, because that building in back right with the wall mural is the demolition building in the past few posts.

  • Yahoo’s Logo

I’ve avoided posting on the new Yahoo logo mainly because I don’t care. I’m not a Yahoo user and I think the value of corporate logos is vastly overrated.

I read this quote on Business Insider, which reinforce my lack of interest:

The opportunity for Yahoo to completely reinvent themselves and show the aspirational consumer the new Yahoo’s potential has been sorely missed.

    The “aspirational consumer”? Really?

But I am a font geek. I will admit that I am obsessive and ridiculous about it. So if you care about the logo and want a good (but obsessive) discussion of the logo from a font perspective (and to his credit, the post title is “geeking out over the logo”) check out this post.

  • Trust the Math

With the latest “NSA can break encryption” revelations, I think it’s important to know what this really means. Unfortunately, we really can’t because we don’t know the details.

Here is a link to an article from a security tech guy writing for the Guardian. He’s seen Snowden documents. What he says, and what I’ve read in other sources, is that the NSA doesn’t have some incredible mathematical algorithm to hack encryption. They’ve managed to hack the keys that encrypt. They have back doors.

    Snowden himself said:

Encryption works. Properly implemented strong crypto systems are one of the few things that you can rely on.

The final paragraph of the article says:

Trust the math. Encryption is your friend.

For most people, this whole subject is overkill. The author has one laptop that he specifically never connects to the internet. But he’s dealing with the Snowden documents. That’s not a normal situation.

If you have real security concerns, his recommendations are very good.

  • That Was Quick

So much for that building. Just clean up now. I suspect this will be boring until they start actual building.

  • Bike Lanes

    Funny and so true

  • Guinness

Guinness is not my beer, but this is a great ad:

  • The Red Lantern

Seth Godin raises an interesting question here. I don’t know the answer, but I suspect it’s important.
