  • Quantum Computing

A good overview of Quantum Computing. As Richard Feynman supposedly said:

If you think you understand quantum mechanics, you don’t understand quantum mechanics.

  • Vacation with a Nexus 7

I spent a large portion of vacation leaving my laptop closed and using only my Nexus 7 (the old version). That says much about how good a vacation it was (pictures to follow) and much about the Nexus 7.

There was one point I was showing someone a video on the Nexus. This was an Apple fan person. Her reaction was, “hey, that’s like the iPad Mini”. I refrained from saying, “yeah, 8 months before it came out”. Or saying, “yeah, funny how Jobs said 7 inch tablets were worthless”.

I was just quiet and said, ‘”yes, it’s very nice”. For your amusement, the video was this, of a sink hole in Lousiana:

  • Over

One final spectacular subset. Heading home tomorrow.

  • Almost Over

    Vacation is almost done…

  • Bartender in Antarctica

One drawback was the hangovers: after a particularly heavy session, I would have to nip outside to be sick. Any liquid that came into contact with the ice froze immediately and, if left alone, it would remain so for ever. It was a point of honour to clear up after yourself, which meant chipping away with a pickaxe

    Not your normai bar experience…

  • Tank

No real comment, other than any time I complain about driving in NYC I’ll remember that driving in Russia is way worse.

  • Almost Vacation

Regular readers know our summer vacation plans. It’s the same this year. Two week (yes, two!) in Cape Cod. Same place, same beach, same sunsets. Expect very similar pictures with taller daughters.

It’s hard to believe this girl:

is now 10. But that shot of Danielle was from our first visit to this beach house in 2008.

    More in a few weeks…

  • Dumbo Citi Bike Wedding

Citi Bike tweeted and posted this wedding shot on Ow.ly, for obvious reasons.

They also posted a link to more wedding pictures. It felt odd looking at a random couple’s wedding pictures, but they were all taken directly outside my office.

That’s the Citi Bike rack right outside my office.

The big arch they are kissing under is the Manhattan Bridge as pictured here.

That blue wall used to be a big mural, as pictured here (they painted it blue after the black).

The park where she stands by the water is the same one as this.

If I haven’t mentioned it before, Dumbo is very photogenic…

  • It Flies

In 1980, the American Helicopter Society created the AHS Sikorsky Prize, to be given to the first human powered helicopter. To win you had to fly at least 60 seconds, reach an altitude of 3 meters, with the center of the aircraft hovering within a 10×10 meter square.

33 years later, the prize has been won.
