  • Flower Girls, Again

Our niece Alexandra got married last weekend, and Danielle and Victoria got to be flower girls again. They get to do it again in a month for our nephew, so they are becoming wedding professionals. I’m thinking this could turn into a paying gig…

Anyway, the wedding was beautiful. A nice intimate family wedding in Westchester. The bride was beautiful, everyone had a good time, and my girls danced the night away.

    The obligatory pictures…

  • Fenway’s 100th Birthday

As a Yankee fan, I hate the Red Sox, but as a baseball fan you have to appreciate Fenway. So the 100th birthday ceremony was nice, and the fact that the Yankees won even nicer.

More amusing was the NY Post front page:

For the non New Yorkers, no, that wasn’t’ edited in Photoshop. The Post has no issues with putting “ass kicking” on the front page…

  • Valve Company Handbook

Definitely worth a read. Some highlights:

Valve is flat. It’s our shorthand way of saying that we don’t have any management, and nobody “reports to” anybody else. We do have a founder/president, but even he isn’t your manager. This company is yours to steer—toward opportunities and away from risks. You have the power to green-light projects. You have the power to ship products.

While people occasionally choose to push themselves to
work some extra hours at times when something big is
going out the door, for the most part working overtime for
extended periods indicates a fundamental failure in planning
    or communication

And if you stop on the way back from your massage to play darts or work out in the Valve gym or whatever, it’s not a sign that this place is going to come crumbling down like some 1999-era dot-com startup. If we ever institute caviar-catered lunches, though, then maybe something’s wrong. Definitely panic if there’s caviar.

Everyone is a designer. Everyone can question each other’s work

From the glossary at the end:

Coffee Machine, Right-hand Dispenser—The dispenser in all coffee machines at Valve that holds the decaffeinated coffee beans. To the best of our knowledge, these have never needed to be refilled. For all we know, the beans are decorative plastic.

  • Happy Birthday Fenway

Today was the 100th birthday for Fenway Park.

Let’s see, to start the game the Red Sox dropped a pop-up to let Jeter get on base. He would later score. Red Sox pitchers gave up five home runs. And to top it off, the greatest closer in history (who of course plays for the arch rival Yankees) Mariano Rivera, finished the game.

Seriously, the baseball gods just hate Boston fans…

  • Just Watch

A cool experiment and optical illusion…

  • RIMS 2012

For those not in the insurance industry (it’s ok, you can admit it) RIMS stands for Risk and Insurance Management Society and is the pre-eminent insurance risk management organization.

RIMS holds a conference every year. In the insurance industry, it’s a big deal. And for an insurance software vendor like Origami Risk, it is an important place to show your stuff.

As an aside, we have serious acronym confusion here. Origami Risk has the best Risk Management Information System (RMIS) on the planet (according to this blog). So we were showing our RMIS at RIMS.

This year’s RIMS conference was in Philly. Maybe not the sexiest location, but easy to get to so there was a nice turnout.

Origami had a tremendous conference. The buzz around Origami was clear as the booth had constant traffic. The best part was how many people came by not because of an appointment but because they had heard so many good things about us.

A couple of pictures. One a tad blurry:

Origami Risk was clearly the RMIS to beat at this year’s RIMS.

  • Yum

As a baseball fan, I’ve always wanted to visit Cooperstown. If I ever visit, I’ll make a point to also visit the Ommegang brewery. These guys are doing it right.

I’m a big fan of Witte and Hennepin, but I’m currently trying Art of Darkness.

    I can’t say “yum” enough times…
