  • A Happy Birthday

    Danielle turned five this weekend. We did her party at the same gymnastics place as last year, but this year we did rock climbing. They have a small rock climbing wall for kids.

    It was pretty good. Most kids were excited to go up the wall. The coaches were good. Very encouraging and funny. First they did some lateral climbing without being roped in (Danielle is in the middle).

    Then they got harnessed in one at a time and went to the top (well, some of them). Danielle made it to the top (made me proud).

    Our nanny, Maggie is holding her. So a good time was had by all.

  • Strange Whisky Ad

    I’m ready Sports Illustrated (subscriber since college) and I come across an ad for Canadian Club. The title of the ad is:

    Your Mom Wasn’t Your Dad’s First

    The text reads:

    He went out. He got two numbers in the same night. He drank cocktails. But they were whisky cocktails. Made with Canadian Club. Served in rocks glass. They tasted good. They were effortless.

    It ends with the large text:

    Damn Right Your Dad Drank It.

    The ad has some very old pictures of guys mingling, and in one case kissing, women.

    I don’t even know where to begin with how boggled I am by this ad. Imagining your parents having sex is hard enough, they want me to imagine my father being a player before he met my mom. The whole ad campaign is predicated on me thinking my dad was a super cool swinger.

    My dad was great and smart and I loved him. But a hip swinger who got chicks is not the picture I have or want. Even if by some strange chance it was true.

    Yeah, I’ll be drinking a lot of Canadian Club…

    It was a good Halloween. We had perfect weather for trick or treating.

    Danielle was Ariel the Mermaid (but when she has legs, because it’s hard to trick or treat with a tail).

    I’ve been busy lately so I haven’t blogged in a while.

    Packers are 6-1

    I have no idea how a team can be 6-1 with virtually no running game, but Favre is having a great year. Last night’s finish was another classic to add to the list.

    Red Sox sweep

    It’s hard for a Yankee fan to say this, but that’s a good Red Sox team. Beckett is Mr. October.

    A-Rod gone

    A-Rod is getting slammed for the way he exercised his opt-out clause. It’s a business and he has every right to try to get as much money as possible. But if you are asking for a 10 year deal you can’t say that the reason you opted out is because you aren’t sure if Posada, Rivera and Pettitte are coming back. They are all likely to be retired four years from now.

    If you want a ten year deal and you want to win, you have to look at the teams that are most likely to remain competitive for the next ten years. That’s a short list. Yankees and Red Sox are clearly at the top of the list. If you want a ten year deal and you want the most money, that’s another matter.

    And don’t have your agent announce the opt-out during the World Series. Show some class…
