Brookings Loves ACA
Two healthcare experts from the notoriously socialist Brookings Institution have released a report on the impact of Obamacare on healthcare premiums. Based on headlines today, the conclusions might surprise you.
Read the whole thing, but this is part of the conclusion:
The ACA marketplaces, though imperfect, represent a clear improvement over the unstructured, non-transparent individual health insurance market that existed beforehand. They have been quite successful in lowering premiums for consumers while simultaneously providing better insurance. While guaranteed issue, required essential benefits, and restrictions on medical underwriting undoubtedly pushed up premiums, aspects of the ACA that created a far more competitive individual insurance market appear to have more than offset those effects

You’re The Guy Paving
I love Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee series. The latest episode has Lorne Michaels, long time producer of Saturday Night Live (assuming that explanation was superfluous). Given that Lorne isn’t a comedian, it may not be the funniest episode, but it has great quotes:
…his grandfather came to America, and was told the streets were paved with gold. And when he got to America he found out three things:
1) The streets are not paved with gold
2) The streets are not paved
3) He’s gonna be the guy paving them
And I think anything you start, you’re in that position
And a classic from a total New Yorker:

Police in Oak Creek are searching for 20,000 pounds of stolen cheese
Vince Christian, of Wisconsin Cheese Mart, said cheese theft is considered a growing problem in his industry
“The cheese pirates are back at it again,” Christian joked. “It’s kind of crazy that cheese is now so valuable people are going off with entire trucks of it.”

Origami Risk Rocks 2016 RMIS Review
I don’t normally promote my company on this blog, but an independent review of vendors in our area just came out. (RMIS stands for risk management information system, meaning insurance risk management).
Origami Risk killed it.

Old Dude Nails 900
Tony Hawk is almost as old as me. 17 years ago he was the first skateboarder ever to perform a 900 (two and a half full revolutions) in competition.
At 48 he decided to do it one more time.
In Jerry Seinfeld’s Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee series, the episode with Chris Rock, he says something like:
To learn to do a skateboard trick, how many times do you have to get something wrong first, until you get it right? And you hurt yourself and if you learn to do that trick, now you got a life lesson. Whenever I see those skateboard kids, I think, those kids will be all right.
Watch a 48 year old try to do the trick one more time:
