  • Still Rowing

    https://twitter.com/row4hemophilia/status/743971202633326593

The Row for Hemophilia team got off to a slow start with some nasty weather. They were basically told to batten down the hatches and ride it out. But the weather has turned and they are back on the move.

Supposedly they are going to be getting a new tracking system (wasn’t explained to me how) since the currently system seems to be updating very infrequently.

With improved weather, they are hoping to get into a groove. Looking at the other boats in the official Great Pacific Race (2 of which have already retired) it’s hard to imagine the row taking less than 70 days. Crazy.

  • This Asshole

I read Nate Silver and follow him on Twitter. I have never before heard him refer to someone as an asshole.

  • Roll Me Some Ice Cream

One of many “things” that I wasn’t aware of. Apparently this is a Thai creation that is hugely popular in NYC.

It’s hard to describe. You order ice cream with certain flavors. Say “oreo banana, caramel”. They take a couple Oreos and a small part of banana and some caramel and put it on this large round metal pan. This pan is apparently hyper cooled (-23 degrees?). Then they pour cream on top of it. While the cream is freezing they super chop the Oreo/banana (or whatever). They kind of scoop it together to get it all the right consistency and then they spread it super thin across the pan.

At this point they roll it. You then have five rolled cylinders and they dump toppings on top. This is from a Manhattan place that apparently has lines around the block.

There’s a new place in Brooklyn that does this and we went last weekend. Lines were not around the block but it was excellent.

  • Rowing for Hemophilia

It’s been a crazy week for the Row for Hemophilia team. The Great Pacific Race was set to start on June 5th. If you didn’t real the earlier post, this is an endurance rowing race from California to Hawaii. One of the rowers, Jacob Pope (a rower for University of Georgia) is a hemophiliac and is using this race to raise awareness and money for the cause.

    boat

The day before the race was to start, the race decided that they couldn’t participate because Jacob is a hemophiliac. Which they knew about. Which was the whole point.

You can imagine their frustration. They’ve trained for a year, prepared a boat for a 40-80 day row and suddenly they aren’t allowed to do it.

But they are a determined pair, so they just got busy.

They organized the same safety precautions that the race was offering. They got Coast Guard approval. They got approval from both harbor masters. They changed the registry of their boat (recently purchased from the race director) to the US because the Coast Guard gives US vessels priority. They arranged for GPS tracking.

It took a while, but a week later, they were ready to do it on their own.

They left about 3AM Pacific Time today. So the rest of the race has about a six day head start. You can see their position here, though it may be several hours behind (the map updates 7 times a day).

Will they pull it off? Who knows. Rowing to Hawaii is pretty much crazy by definition. But I’ll be following and cheering.

As a very satisfied Amazon Echo owner, I’m currently annoyed that I can’t say “TV, off”.

    Where’s the damn remote…

  • More Popeye

    Toot, toot…

  • Elon Musk is Popeye

I’m not exactly sure why this picture reminds me of Popeye (obviously the pipe blowing smoke but out of both sides?).

This picture just before the landing is awesome (serious tilt, talk about barely making it):
