  • View From My Window

It’s getting really noisy. The guy way on the left has been using a jack hammer on that cement section. Those two guys in red are cutting into the cement.

And I’m pretty sure that tall thing in the back right is one of those pile driver things that makes deep holes.

I’m still not sure what all the big pipes are for, but that small excavator has been moving them around.

Can anyone recommend a good set of noise cancelling headphones?

  • Your Sh**ty Commute

The context is that 37Signals is a well known software company. They have long promoted a few key concepts, including bootstrapping over taking VC money, actually charging users for software, and hiring the best people regardless of where they happen to live.

Their book Getting Real was excellent (and is now free in PDF).

Their book Rework was also excellent.

They have a new book coming out called Remote. Presumably to promote it, they are asking people to describe their shitty commute.

I can’t relate, because my commute rocks. Scooter or Citi Bike. 15 minutes tops, with my daughters half the way (en route to school).

    The opposite of shitty…

  • View From My Window–Jamie Foxx

Well, not really my window, I had to go to the architects office on the other side of the building for the right view. Jamie Foxx is definitely filming today (go full screen).

The view of the filming from a couple windows over:

    Update:
As I went to get lunch they seemed to be setting up a scene with a “food bank”. The picture below is literally as I walk out my door. I could barely get around the camera.

The line of people below seems to be a bunch of extras getting ready to fill those long tables in the back. The tracks in the lower right are for a camera to roll back and forth.

They were about to start shooting when the subway started rolling across the Manhattan Bridge. For those not familiar with Dumbo, it’s loud. So they had to wait to start the scene. I think this is Jamie Foxx’s “damn subway” face…

  • Annie Filming Outside My Office

I didn’t even know they were doing a remake of Annie. They are filming right outside my office today. Security made it hard for me to even get to my office this morning.

I guess I should keep an eye out for Jamie Foxx and Cameron Diaz…

  • Full

Another successful Atlantic Antic. For me it’s mainly about the food. I ate:

    • Alcapurria
    • Cheddar Bratwurst
    • Roasted Corn
    • Some random Thai wrap that I don’t even know what it was, but it was delicious.
    • Jerk Chicken
    • Popcorn

    Not necessarily in that order.

    I drank:

But it’s not all about me. The girls had bouncy castle type events, including the flipping ladder thing (we hit these early, before the crowds):

There were random arts and crafts. One store simply had blocks out for the kids. This was Danielle’s effort:

There was face painting, Tori rode a horse (thrill for a city kid):

Danielle is now big enough to enjoy the shopping aspect of it. This artist had a stand and Danielle bought one.

With newly pierced ears, earrings are a big deal:

Full, happy and tired. Another great Antic.

  • The Antic

I will eat well today. It’s the annual Atlantic Antic. The largest street fair in NYC. And it’s right outside my front door. More when I’m full…

  • No Beer for Me

I was going to grab a burger and a beer on the way home at my favorite joint. Imagine my surprise when that half of the block is full of film equipment and my bar is closed.

Apparently an episode of Hostages is being filmed there today.

    Maybe I’ll watch…

  • Remembering

Another 9/11. I listened to some of the reading of names, as usual. I seem to listen at least enough to hear one of the names of our friends. Today I heard Scott Bart, the first in my old 9/11 post.

Following that Neil deGrasse Tyson video post, I started following him on Twitter. That lead me to his blog post on 9/12/2001. He lived four blocks from the World Trade Center and his account is gripping.

Today is a hazier day than that 9/11. Here’s the new World Trade Center as it stands today.

  • Scooter Time (and Theft)

School has started for my girls so that means Citi Bike goes away and I’m back to the scooter. I prefer biking, but when taking my girls to school the scooter works better.

But a couple of weeks ago, we had a bad city experience. Our nanny had taken the girls on a play date. The friend’s apartment was a new building in Brooklyn Heights. If you don’t know Brooklyn, that’s a really nice neighborhood. They had Danielle’s, Tori’s and my scooter (I think my nanny’s daughter Mia was riding mine). They told our nanny that leaving the scooters in the lobby would be fine.

    Oops.

Two of the three scooter got stolen. Everyone was shocked. My nanny was horrified. She thought I’d be really mad. The parents offered to pay for our new scooters. But honestly, stuff happens. We’ve lived in Brooklyn forever and never dealt with theft. It’s a huge city. It happens.

The only good part was that of the three scooters, they took the two oldest (mine and Danielle’s). We had been talking about getting Danielle a new one anyway. Mine wasn’t that old, but I’m hard on scooters.

And the new Razor A5 comes in a cool blue. So Danny and I have new scooters. Tori is jealous.

I’m out a chunk of money which is no fun, but it’s all part of living in the big city. With how great our neighborhood is, one theft every 15 years is not that bad.

Now the only issue is that Tori always wants to ride my scooter…

  • Citi Bike Art Ride

Check out their blog. The building right behind the Pearl Street Triangle Painting is my office.

It’s an old picture, because that building in back right with the wall mural is the demolition building in the past few posts.
