  • That Was Quick

So much for that building. Just clean up now. I suspect this will be boring until they start actual building.

  • Bike Lanes

    Funny and so true

  • More Demolition

Incremental progress today. But I did see them about to knock over more walls so I got some video. And man, my window needs cleaning…

  • Citi Bike Update

With school for my girls starting next week, I’ll be doing more scootering and less Citi Bike. I think I will miss the bike.

Citi Bike will be 100 days old this week.

    Total miles: 5.5 million

    Total rides: 2.5 million

    Annual Memberships: 74,000

Haven’t seen any negative articles in the NY Post or the Wall Street Journal for a long time.

All riders are one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon now. Celebrity Citi Bike sightings are commonplace.

In addition to the official app, third party CitiBike apps are appearing for Android and iPhone.

    Big. Fat. Success.

  • Some ActionToday

Finally some good demolition action today. I was a hair too slow to video the big machine (what do you call that thing?) pull down that front wall. It was cool.

Interestingly they immediately hose down the rubble. Concerned about sparks starting a fire? That’s the only think I could think of.

Maybe it’s a guy thing, but destruction is fun to watch.

  • Demolition

I mentioned in an earlier post that the building across from my office window is being demolished to put up high end condos. Since my office is on the second floor, I am a bit concerned about how noisy this will be.

They have begun the demolition part. And while there is a tall wooden fence blocking the view of pedestrians, the view from my office is somewhat fascinating. It’s one of the interesting things about building in a dense city. This building touches the side of three other buildings. You can’t just knock it over, you have to tear it down carefully.

This is what is going on this morning. You can’t tell from the picture, but the roof is largely gone. There are just the wooden slats running across left to right (note that inside is nice and bright because the sun comes through). If you enlarge the picture you can see the guy on the roof standing on a wood square for safety (though I’ve seen them walk across the slats).

But there are still large air conditioning units on the roof (the middle of the three has minimal structural support). It will be interesting to see how they remove those.

So this may be an ongoing series, “how to demolish a building in Dumbo”. Or maybe it gets loud and I have to move…

  • Go Cyclones

A friend of ours gave us tickets to see the Brooklyn Cyclones last night, so I took my daughter’s and one of their friends. This is single A ball. The baseball park is at Coney Island and is quite nice.

The Cyclones are a Mets team and they were actually playing the Staten Island Yankees but at the Single-A level, I’m rooting for the home team.

It was a good game. The Cyclone’s pitcher threw a one-hitter for 6 innings with 9 strike-outs. Danielle liked that because they play the Law and Order sound after every strike out and that amused her.

The girls cared more about the cotton candy than the game and we only lasted 7 innings. But a good time was had by all.

    And it was jersey night…

  • Dumbo Citi Bike Wedding

Citi Bike tweeted and posted this wedding shot on Ow.ly, for obvious reasons.

They also posted a link to more wedding pictures. It felt odd looking at a random couple’s wedding pictures, but they were all taken directly outside my office.

That’s the Citi Bike rack right outside my office.

The big arch they are kissing under is the Manhattan Bridge as pictured here.

That blue wall used to be a big mural, as pictured here (they painted it blue after the black).

The park where she stands by the water is the same one as this.

If I haven’t mentioned it before, Dumbo is very photogenic…

  • Columbus Ohio Gets Bike Share

It’s sweeping the nation. Or at least Columbus. And other than the paint job, it’s the exact same bike as in NYC.

After a bit of Googling, this is the bike, from PBSC Urban Solutions. And it’s in quite a few cities.
