  • Google Enhanced

If you have Google Photos you know that Google has an algorithm that identifies certain photos and automatically “enhances” them for you. I don’t know if the algorithm likes sunsets or it’s just because our vacation is on a great sunset beach (so I took lots of sunset pictures), but I got a ton of enhanced photos. These are all basically the same picture from the same vantage point on different days.

One of the great things about Skaket Beach is the crazy tides. At low tide you can walk straight out about a mile. I like going on Google Maps and taking a screenshot of my location…

I wasn’t in a boat, I was standing on sand.

  • Vacation Sunset 1

The sunsets on Skaket Beach are awesome and I generally take way too many pictures of them. And they always are better than the pictures. Regardless, here’s one…

  • Sandcastles

Low tide at Skaket Beach is great for sandcastles and once in a while a pro shows up. The other day we watched this being made:

Yes, that’s real fire coming out of the dragon’s mouth.

The next day just one of the guys showed up for a quick one:

  • Unusual Beach Day

We are on vacation at our favorite place in Cape Cod, Skaket Beach. I’ve posted about this place many times. Pictures never do it justice. The crazy thing about this beach are the tides. At high tide it’s a normal, smallish nice swimming beach. It’s calm and on the bay side where the water is a little warmer.

Low tide is a completely different beach. You can literally walk straight out a mile without getting your knees wet. Yesterday morning, according to Google Maps, I was here:

That’s not bad GPS, that’s accurate. Here’s a picture from that location, looking back towards shore.

See the house we are staying in way in the background? No, I don’t either. But it’s there. So that’s low tide. Nothing unusual there, happens twice a day. At low tide people catch minutes, clams, crabs, harvest oysters, all kinds of things. As you can see, it was a cloudy morning and a storm passed through. There was a lightning concern so they had to clear the beach. Resulting in this odd beach ghost town.

Chairs and umbrellas, just no people.

Another nice thing about being on the bay side is that sharks are typically on the ocean side. Unfortunately, later on this same day we got our first ever water clearing shark warning.

And that would be the same beach at high tide. Basically everything in the first picture is under water.

The shark warming passed, all those folks got back in, and the beach went back to normal. Whatever constitutes normal at Skaket Beach…

  • A Really Good Movie

We don’t get to the movies a lot. Busy/Kids/etc. pick your excuse. We obviously skew towards family movies. When we saw Despicable Me 3 there was a preview for Coco that looked good and we put it in our “ought to see” list.

My wife and I took the day after Christmas off, and a movie was on the agenda. Pitch Perfect 3 and The Greatest Showman are also on the family’s list, but Coco came out at Thanksgiving and probably won’t be around long, so that was our choice. I also happened to check the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Name a movie out today with 90% or higher in both the Rotten Tomatoes reviewers score and audience score. There is exactly one. Coco has a crazy 97/96 rating.

And we saw why. My wife cried, the audience applauded at the end. It’s just good.

  • Atlantic Antic 2017

    a75b9db6-b6e6-42fe-98c8-d10fad6f05b6_2x

I’ve blogged about this so many times, please refer to prior year posts. The kiddos are getting older so we actually got to sit down at one place to enjoy food and drinks. It was hot this year, but overall a very nice antic. Food roundup for me:

    • alcupurrias (Spanish church)
    • corn (who knows, it’s everywhere)
    • empenanda (second pass by the Spanish church, seriously good)
    • oysters (from French Louie – they said they had 3,000 oysters and ran out)
    • fries (same place, really good)
    • bratwurst (random German stand)
    • pizza (Brado, my local joint)
    • gumbo (The Gumbo Bros)

What makes this the best street fair in NYC is that on top of the generic street fair food (not that there’s any wrong with the sausage and peppers truck), the local joints are providing the food, drinks and music. Crazy good fun. I need to burp…

  • Google Photos Assistant

We just got back from vacation at our usual place in Cape Cod. You can take the pictures from the posts from any previous years, imagine my daughters slightly older, and that’s how it was. We just love the spot (Skaket Beach, Orleans MA).

Our beach is a great sunset beach. People arrive at the beach at 7 PM just for the sunset. When the sun sets, they applaud. So at the end of every vacation I have a plethora of sunset pictures. And with all of them, my reaction is “yeah, but it was even better”.

As a long time Google Photos user, I love how they will pick pictures and try to enhance them. They almost always pick some sunset pictures. Here are the nine pictures that Google decided to enhance from this vacation. One is really two pictures stitched together as a panorama. Every picture here was taken from our deck (with my phone).

    Thanks Google.

  • Vacation

I didn’t realize how long it had been since my last blog post. I don’t want to post about politics and these days it seems hard to avoid, hence my absence.

And I’m about to go on our regular Cape Cod vacation. It will look a lot like any one of these posts:
