Brooklyn Cyclones
I went to my first minor league baseball game last night. A friend of my wife had four tickets he wasn’t using so we hopped on the subway to catch the Cyclones. Sure, they’re a Mets franchise and I’m a Yankees fan, but it’s Brooklyn after all. Go Cyclones.
It’s a nice small stadium. They do the normal silly minor league stuff between innings, my girls ate a bunch of junk food, it was a beautiful night, and a good time was had by all.
That is Coney Island in the background (and a full moon rising over left center).

Usain Bolt vs. Sprinters Across Time
The New York Times does a nice visualization comparing Usain Bolt to Olympic sprinters from all years.

Sports and Parents
If you are a sports fan and you don’t read Bill Simmons, you should. He’s one of, if not the, best sports writers today. And I say that when he roots for all the teams I hate.
A recent post is about sports fans and their kids. Not the sports parents watching their kids play, but a parent teaching his kid to be a real fan.

No Hitter for the Mets
As a Yankee fan, I’m not usually rooting for the Mets. But Johan Santana is a great pitcher and a class act. Who better to get the Mets first no hitter in franchise history.
So for one night I will say, “Let’s Go Mets”

Sports Endings
John Elway finished his career by winning the Super Bowl as the MVP of the game. That’s how we want all sports greats to end their careers.
Sadly, it rarely happens.
My favorite Yankee, Mariano (Mo) Rivera, tore his ACL catching fly balls during batting practice yesterday. It was widely assumed that this was going to be Mo’s last season, so it’s quite possible this is a career ending injury.
Non Yankee fans are probably wondering why the greatest closer of all time was catching fly balls during batting practice. He did this every day. Mariano is a great athlete and always joked that he wanted to play center field. Defensively, he had the skills (offensively, not so much).
Mike Lupica of the NY Daily News wrote this today:
I would stand with him in front of his locker and say, “Who’s the best outfielder on this team, really?”
Mo Rivera would smile and say, “You know the answer.”
And I’d tell him I wanted to hear him say it. So he would.“I am,” Mo would say.
So it was a freaky injury, but he got hurt doing something he loved. Could be worse. But not the way you want to see a great player go out.

Fenway’s 100th Birthday
As a Yankee fan, I hate the Red Sox, but as a baseball fan you have to appreciate Fenway. So the 100th birthday ceremony was nice, and the fact that the Yankees won even nicer.
More amusing was the NY Post front page:

For the non New Yorkers, no, that wasn’t’ edited in Photoshop. The Post has no issues with putting “ass kicking” on the front page…

Happy Birthday Fenway
Today was the 100th birthday for Fenway Park.
Let’s see, to start the game the Red Sox dropped a pop-up to let Jeter get on base. He would later score. Red Sox pitchers gave up five home runs. And to top it off, the greatest closer in history (who of course plays for the arch rival Yankees) Mariano Rivera, finished the game.
Seriously, the baseball gods just hate Boston fans…
