  • Packer fans are nuts…

OK, I’m a huge Packer fan and a huge Brett Favre fan, but $150 for a knit Packers hat just because Favre wears it?

    Crazy…

  • Vegas Odds

My morning paper, the NY Daily News (not as good as the NY Times, but better sports coverage) always posts the Vegas betting lines. Purely for entertainment purposes, of course.

The Patriots being favored by 23 1/2 points over the Jets is pretty amusing (I’d bet on the Patriots). But what I like is when they print unusual odds.

For example, you can now bet on whether the AFC or NFC team will win the super bowl. The AFC team is a 11 1/2 point favorite. You have to assume they are thinking either the Patriots or the Colts against the Cowboys. Sorry Cowboys fans, Vegas isn’t giving you much of a chance.

The paper also posted the presidential election odds. Hillary is still the favorite at 5-2 with Rudy next at 7-2. Obama is 5-1 and Romney 8-1. Huckabee is 10-1 and it drops after that. It’s hard to believe McCain has fallen to 20-1 and Fred Thompson is down to 25-1. They’ve got Gore at 25-1 and he’s not even running.

I can’t wait for the super bowl when they post odds on crazy things like the over/under on how long the national anthem will be…

  • Unwatchable

It’s a good thing that the Packers are good this year. And that Indiana University basketball should be good. Because I just can’t watch the Knicks anymore.

It’s just sad. This is a storied franchise. Playing in Madison Square Garden. Season ticket holders are having a hard time getting rid of the seats. No one wants to go. The only fun in going to a game would be to chant “Fire Isiah” anyway.

    Sad, sad, sad…

  • How ’bout them Packers?

If you had told me at the beginning of the season that they’d be 9-1 I would have laughed at you. Honestly, who thought they be this good? And I’m a huge Favre fan.

I still think part of it is that the rest of the league stinks. Honestly, are there only four good teams? Patriots, Colts, Cowboys, Packers? OK, maybe the Giants, maybe the Steelers. It’s much easier to be 9-1 when everyone you play is lame.

We’ll see how it goes on Thanksgiving. Maybe Detroit is for real. I keep wondering if the Packers are for real but at 9-1 it’s hard to think otherwise…

  • Random Sports Thought

I’ve been busy lately so I haven’t blogged in a while.

    Packers are 6-1

I have no idea how a team can be 6-1 with virtually no running game, but Favre is having a great year. Last night’s finish was another classic to add to the list.

    Red Sox sweep

It’s hard for a Yankee fan to say this, but that’s a good Red Sox team. Beckett is Mr. October.

    A-Rod gone

A-Rod is getting slammed for the way he exercised his opt-out clause. It’s a business and he has every right to try to get as much money as possible. But if you are asking for a 10 year deal you can’t say that the reason you opted out is because you aren’t sure if Posada, Rivera and Pettitte are coming back. They are all likely to be retired four years from now.

If you want a ten year deal and you want to win, you have to look at the teams that are most likely to remain competitive for the next ten years. That’s a short list. Yankees and Red Sox are clearly at the top of the list. If you want a ten year deal and you want the most money, that’s another matter.

And don’t have your agent announce the opt-out during the World Series. Show some class…

  • I can’t vote for Rudy

Rudy Giuliani recently announced that he is rooting for the Red Sox.

    For a Yankee’s fan, that’s just wrong…

  • Still a Yankee fan

OK, so she doesn’t even know they lost in the first round. But my daughter is still a Yankee fan…

  • US Open, Tennis and Silence

I was at the Women’s finals of the US Open on Saturday. The US Open is a great, if overpriced, event. No annual sporting event attracts more people than the US Open (it is two weeks long, after all). The American Express Gold Card gets you a shot a tickets a bit before the general public (but apparently after anyone with real connections) so we always try to go one night. The last two years we’ve picked the women’s final because it’s on a Saturday night.

The night sessions are fun at the Open. They are much rowdier, and tennis needs a bit of that. I’m not a huge tennis fan. I enjoy it, and follow the majors, but that’s about it.

This year’s women’s final was a bit lame. Henin simply stomped her opponent. At no point in the match did the outcome seem in doubt. And it always helps to have one of the Williams sisters in the final. Love them or hate them, they add a ton of buzz to the match.

But the weirdest thing for a baseball/basketball/football fan about tennis is the total silence. In between points, one person can easily yell something and the entire stadium will hear it. Try that at Yankee stadium. Imagine if at a basketball game, the crowd had to be silent during a free throw.

I was at a Yankee game with a friend of mine recently, and between cheering and general socializing we pretty much talked the entire game (ok, he’s a talker). At a tennis match you make whispered comments and only occasionally lest you offend someone.

I’d like to see golf and tennis players have to deal with distractions. C’mon Tiger, hit a 40 putt with people screaming…
