I’m obviously not the most common age demographic for TikTok (though I do have an account). Given it’s success it clearly doesn’t suck, but from the content creators point of view? This video from Hank Green is a fascinating look at the economics of content creation and platforms. YouTube appears to be a total outlier in terms of genuinely paying the creators…

Web3 as Poop Emoji
That’s probably the strangest post title I’ve ever written. I really can’t explain it, just read this post. It’s written by the founder of Signal.
Despite considering myself a cryptographer, I have not found myself particularly drawn to “crypto.” I don’t think I’ve ever actually said the words “get off my lawn,” but I’m much more likely to click on Pepperidge Farm Remembers flavored memes about how “crypto” used to mean “cryptography” than I am the latest NFT drop.
He makes an excellent point that despite the web3 goal of a decentralized web, people are going to connect to a Blockchain through one or two services for convenience. So you will be at the mercy of the service.
He built an NFT app that ultimately delivered a poop emoji (read the post, it’s excellent). OpenSea (NFT marketplace) ultimately stopped showing it. Is it still on the Blockchain? I assume so. If you bought it could you see it? Sorry.
Poop.

Obviously I’ve always wanted to use that title for a post.
If you don’t think that’s cool, I have no words…

Useful Alarm
From Dave Winer

This is exactly right. We all know the last five minutes of an NBA game are the best part. Why hasn’t someone built a notification for that?

Jet Ski Rant
This is as good an 11 minute rant on capitalism and regulation (or lack thereof) as you are likely to hear. From Seth Godin’s Akimbo:
The practical ethics of the Jet Ski | Akimbo: A Podcast from Seth Godin on Acast
This is the audio you hear at one point in the podcast:

Stack Overflow Acquired
Most of you probably have no idea what Stack Overflow is, but every software developer on the planet uses it daily. That might be an exaggeration, but not by much. I can’t imagine my day without it
So congrats to Joel Spolsky and the rest of the folks involved. You deserve whatever payoff you got. And it sounds like the plan is to keep it going.
I sure hope so…

Google Fit vs Apple Watch
As a technology follow up to the post below, here’s the full walk we did according to Google Fit (via my Pixel 5).

The rain held off for the first half… My wife’s Apple Watch called it 9.1 miles. That’s a non trivial discrepancy. The map above is accurate. I would tend to take Google over Apple on maps, but how much does the phone or app play into it?

“This is wrong, but it would explain so much”. I feel that sentence applies to so many things…

Via SMBC as usual.
