  • Formulaic Linkbait

This post from Seth Godin amused me because it is so true. All linkbait headlines:

([Integer between 5 and 10] WAYS to [action verb like avoid or stumble or demolish] [juicy adjective like stupid or embarrassing or proven] [noun].)

  • Heartbleed Explained

I’ve promoted xkcd plenty of times. This explanation of the Heartbleed bug is excellent. So good, I’ve seen multiple sites/tweets linking to it:

  • + POOL

I thought I had blogged about this before, but maybe not. It’s a crazy concept so perhaps I was waiting for it to get closer to reality. I donated to the Kickstarter ages ago, just on the off chance it could work.

The concept is a floating pool in the East River off of Brooklyn Bridge Park. That’s my neighborhood. The technology is to filter the water so it uses filtered river water.

This would be 5 minutes from my office.

Can it work? Who knows? They’ve met with city planners, engineers, boatloads of folks. And they just launched the Float Lab to actually test the technology in the river.

  • 404 Day

For the non-techies, to a web server a 404 error is a “page not found” error. You typed www.cutekittens.com/extracute but that’s not a real page.

In the olden days, you would get a generic web server page. But as tech folks realized that this was a common occurrence, they started developing custom error pages that were at least amusing.

I like this one, both for humor and realism:

    Here are several good ones

  • Generic Brand Video

The original copy came from here. Then these guys turned it into a video.

  • Aerial Photography

Fascinating, from Alex MacLean, each in their own way. Click them all…

  • Mobile First

Microsoft’s new CEO Satya Nadella today said life today is:

    mobile-first and cloud-first

Well duh, but amazing to hear Microsoft say this. They are doing solid work in the cloud with Azure, but he led with “mobile first”. Uh, Bueller.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see how Office for the iPad goes over.

  • CUBESTORMER 3

Smashes the Rubik’s cube record by solving it in 3.253 seconds. This is a robot made with Lego and a Galaxy 4 phone.

You only need to watch seconds 10-16 of this video:
