  • Champions

I’ve mentioned our nephew Matt playing D-III soccer at Mount Saint Mary College in the Skyline Conference. He finished the season leading the league in scoring and the team was optimistic about their chances in the conference tournament.

Yesterday they won the final, 2-1 (Matt had the first goal). Below is the game winner:

This is a huge deal for Mount Saint Mary, who has never won the conference in soccer before. And it means an automatic NCAA tournament bid (obviously another first for Mount Saint Mary).

  • Haunted Citi Bike

Their blog is really quite good.

The brownstone in Greenwich Village is famously haunted by 22 of its former residents—including Mark Twain—who all refuse to leave the premises permanently.

And of course this famous location…

  • The First Human

Not Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal’s funniest comic, but if you are a tech geek and a dad (or mom), it hits home.

This comic apparently got so much reaction they are selling posters of it.

  • More Bill Simmons

A great quote about Dwight Howard’s decision to go to Houston (emphasis mine):

but kudos to Dwight for making a clever basketball decision. He wagered on a top-10 player (James Harden); a top-five GM (Daryl Morey); a good owner (Leslie Alexander); the chance to re-create what he had with the 2009 Magic (who surrounded him with quality outside shooters who opened up the paint for him); and a city that gives him a decent chance to break Calvin Murphy’s “most kids by the most women” NBA record (in progress).

    And more:

To Chris Paul, who basically told the Clippers that after they squashed the first incarnation of their Doc Rivers trade. Chris didn’t like that. He let them know he was heading to Houston to team up with Dwight. And he wasn’t kidding. For about 36 hours, Morey probably felt like all 11 guys in Ocean’s Eleven. You know what happened next: The Clippers blinked, the Doc trade got revived and finished, and the Clippers were offering Chris 107 million reasons to play for him. Crisis averted. The lesson, as always: Chris Paul runs the Clippers.

On Kobe’s reaction (or lack thereof) on Howard’s move:

Is anyone else still saddened that Kobe didn’t crush Dwight on Twitter after the Rockets announcement? I’ve never been more excited for somebody’s next tweet. Even something short and sweet like “Houston, you have a problem” would have worked. Hey, Kobe, I know you’re spending the summer lounging in a hyperbaric-chamber hot tub filled with deer-antler spray and platelet-massaged hemoglobin, but would one spiteful tweet have killed you?

Seriously, writing like that is hilarious.

If anyone is wondering why Nate Silver jumped to ESPN.com, they need only look at the success of Grantland.

  • More Citi Bike Stats

Citi Bike’s blog had been losing steam, but I see that they just moved all the stats here.

Over 830,000 rides to date, and closing in on 2 million miles.

    In under 2 months.

  • Life Continues

Origami Risk has taken the bulk of my attention for the past several years. In the early years it also took the bulk of my extra income.

So lately we’ve been playing catch-up with some family stuff. I mentioned the bedroom split out. This involves new beds for both girls, some new bedroom furniture and new carpets (the current carpets have an interesting collection of stains).

And today we did the initial orthodontist appointment for Danielle. This is my genetic fault (big teeth, small mouth). We’ve known this was coming for a while, so we’ve set aside some cash.

It just feels like life moving on. New bedrooms, braces, furniture, life. Expensive, but all good.

How come when I had braces there were no color options?…

  • A Too Short Vacation

Puerto Rico was fantastic. The weather was 100% perfect. We basically lived by the pool. As my previous post mentioned, this was a repeat of last year’s vacation. And you really can read last year’s post to understand what we did. This was a carbon copy with even better weather.

One difference is the flow of vacations as our girls get older. Day 1, they want to do everything with me. I’m in the pool with them 100% of the time. Day 2 they meet some other kids. They want me around, but not as much. By day 3 the kids are best friends and I am superfluous, which works for me because by then I want to relax by the pool with a book.

Tori (now 6) has become an excellent swimmer, so we don’t have to worry about her in the pool at all. So the days were pretty much:

    • Breakfast
    • Pool
    • Lunch
    • Pool
    • Dinner
    • Pool

Throw in the occasional visit to the beach and a trip to Old San Juan and El Morro and you have our entire vacation.

The girls basically did this for 6 days:

    And the obligatory pictures:

Tori took this. She thought the palm tree shadow looked like a star in the pool.
