  • Cape Cod 2011

We just finished our vacation in Cape Cod. This is the fourth year we’ve gone to this same beach house, so regular blog readers can pretty much refer to any of the last three year’s posts, (2008, 2009, or 2010) to get the general sense. This year’s post will be mainly pictures.

This year we had absolutely spectacular weather except for the very beginning and the very end. We knew we were in for a rainy ride up, but it looked like just a regular rainy day. So we took off without really checking traffic reports. Not a good move.

As we were driving, major roads had lanes closed due to flooding. As we approached the Whitestone Bridge to get out of the city, traffic suddenly comes to a halt. We see people turning around and going the wrong way off an on ramp to get away. Never a good sign.

A little further we see the big traffic sign:

Flooding conditions ahead. All lanes closed.

Suddenly the people going the wrong way on the on ramp made perfect sense. So we did the same. We find an alternate route and get across the bridge.

A bit later, going up I-95, we see a traffic sign saying:

Accident at Connecticut Exit 2. Major delays.

Well, great. We turn on the traffic report to hear that a tractor trailer has flipped and I-95 northbound is completely closed. Time for alternate route #2. But we get around that craziness, the rain subsides and a normal 5 1/2 drive is just 6 1/2 hours. Really not bad, all things considered.

We had to put up with one more day of rain. But we still manage to have some fun on the beach. This is Danielle doing handstands. This will be a major theme of this vacation:

But after that day, the weather was perfect every single day. So it was all beach, all the time. Our beach at low tide:

There were minnows and hermit crabs to catch:

For the second week some friends joined us. They have twins (boy and girl, Cooper and Marieé) age 6. The kids play well together and the great thing about this beach is that the water gets deep so slowly you can give the kids a lot of slack without worrying:

And aside from handstands, there was a lot of hula-hooping:

The only time we left the beach was to go bike riding on the Cape Cod Rail Trail, usually with an ice cream shop as the destination:

During a walk on the beach, we saw an older guy with his adult daughter digging. Tori of course, immediately goes up to them and asks what they are doing. They were clamming. Digging for clams right there. So the guy explains how to look for the little holes that result from clams squirting water so you know where to dig and the kids help out. They help find several claims and we have a great time.

So the next day Danielle says, “I want to go dig for claims”. Now we have no clue if there’s a certain time of day or spot or what. The tide is different so we can’t just go back to the same spot. So we find as similar a spot as possible and look for those holes. And guess what? Clamming is easy. We’re finding clams bigger than your fist and we fill up a big bucket. My wife made clams casino.

The next day we are out there doing it again, and people are asking us how to do it (hey, we’ve done it twice now, we’re experts). So now we have other people giving us clams and having a grand ole time.

    and ridiculous sunsets…

    Every night was like this...
    Every night was like this…

The only downside was Hurricane Irene coming just a bit too early. With it due to hit Brooklyn late Saturday night, we knew that we couldn’t stay until Sunday. We left around 1:15 PM on Saturday afternoon. Most people must have heeded the warnings, because we’ve never seen such little traffic coming home from Cape Cod. We were home before 6 including a McDonald’s stop, just beating the beginning of the heavy rain.

All in all, a fantastic vacation for me and my girls…

  • Orlando 2011

We’re still a bit in low budget mode, so our spring vacation was to Orlando where my wife’s brother lives. And we managed a couple of days at Disney to make the girls happy (somehow, no matter how hard you try, Disney is not low budget).

It was a nice trip. Our girls Uncle Herbie has a new dog, a Chihuahua to go with their Golden Retriever (talk about an an odd size ratio) and our girls love dogs.

Danielle prefers the big dog, but still loved the little one:

     DSC03344

But Tori has always been a little dog fan:

    DSC03349

Regular blog readers might find this picture familiar, except the last time I posted it, Danielle was catching the fish:

    DSC03353

And of course there was Disney. We had to do at least one character meal. Tori, as the second child, gets the bad deal here. I think we did three character meals for Danielle when she was four (ok, we had a bit more money then too).

So Tori got breakfast with Winnie the Pooh and company:

    DSC03363

We stayed a couple nights at Animal Kingdom Lodge which was nice for the girls. This was the view from our balcony:

    DSC03371

And these two just couldn’t get along:

    DSC03372

And this was just behind the pool:

    DSC03373

Tori was good on the rides, though she’s a bit of a scaredy-pants. Danielle will ride anything, but Tori doesn’t like dark rides, or overly fast ones. The best picture came from Splash Mountain. To look at the picture, you would think Tori loved this ride. The truth is that she cried for half of it. But check her out in the picture, hands up having fun:

    DSC03368

    She has potential…

  • Hula Hoops

Danielle, now 8, is a crazy good with a hula hoop. She once did it for an hour straight, just to see if she could. Like many things, when people are good at something, it seems effortless to them. When Danielle is going her hips barely move.

If I try to hula hoop on the other hand, I look like a spastic drunk.

Victoria (4), of course, looks up to her big sister. She’s finally catching on…

    Tori’s starting to get it…
  • Popcorn

For the record, I love popcorn. I have no sweet tooth, but I have a total salt tooth. And popcorn is top of the list.

This is my favorite local bar (despite the fact that their web site is lame and uses comic sans font). Great beer, great food and they have and old school popcorn maker where you can help yourself. And they spice up the popcorn (obviously to get you to drink more beer) in a way that is totally delicious.

My four year old, Victoria, likes popcorn as much as me. At the movies we are collectively dangerous. And she also think the popcorn at the Alehouse is delicious. This is both great and dangerous.

Any time we go anywhere that causes us to pass the Alehouse, Tori will say, “I want popcorn”. Like I need my four year old to give me an excuse to drink beer. I find myself in the extremely strange position of arguing with my daughter not to go to my favorite bar.

Of course, once in a while it is convenient to go there. “Hey, Tori, want to go for popcorn?”. Awesome.

The crazy thing is that invariably after having beers, food and popcorn (yes, I know popcorn is food, but it’s really a whole separate category) I’m the one saying “Tori, it’s time to go”. She wants to stay, I want to go.

Let’s recall, I love beer. Especially good beer. This place has tons of good beer. I love this place. But Tori can eat popcorn longer than I want to drink beer.

I have the best daughter ever…

  • Flower Girls

It took a while, but we just got some of the official pictures from the real photographer. So without further ado, Danielle and Victoria as flower girls:

  • Dance Party

Tonight we were watching something on the Disney Channel and a music video comes up with Nellie Furtado singing Crocodile Rock as a duet with Elton John.

So of course, I have to point out to Danielle that it was his song originally and that the original version is better. But then I realized that I have the original on my iPod (Greatest Hits 1970-2002) so I could show her.

Of course Danielle wants to watch the end of the show first, but after that I play the original Crocodile Rock. There’s me, Danielle and Tori dancing like fools to old school Elton John. I follow up with Benny and the Jets and every other up tempo Elton John hit.

It was a big fat old school dance party with my girls.

  • Tori with Glasses

Victoria and Danielle recently had their annual checkups (November birthdays, 4 and 8 respectively). I’ve been concerned about getting Danielle an eye exam since she has relatively bad genetics as far as her eyes are concerned.

I got glasses when I was 8. Me and my brothers are all pretty blind. For those that don’t know me with glasses or contacts, I did the Lasik thing over 10 years ago and it was totally life changing.

So given my history, it seemed like time to check Danielle’s eyes.

Imagine my delight when the eye doctor said her eyes were totally fine.

We also scheduled an appointment for Tori since we were checking Danielle. Obviously we have no clue on Tori’s genetics (if you don’t read this blog, Tori is adopted). But she’s never given any indication that she has any vision issues.

Imagine my surprise when the doctor says she has astigmatism in both eyes and needs glasses. At four.

The great thing about a four year old is that getting glasses sounds like a great thing. My wife took her to pick them out and she only cried when she found out she couldn’t take them home right away.

Today we picked them up. She looks super cute and loves them. Here’s a not very good picture of her out to dinner with them.

  • Snow Day

We got slammed with snow and high winds in Brooklyn Sunday night. This was supposed to be a nice quiet week at work where I’d get a lot done. But the subways weren’t running consistently this morning and our nanny had no good way to get to us, so it turned into a snow day.

So we bundled up and went outside. This is what it looked like outside our place (on Atlantic Avenue, a major street) at about 10:00 am.

    IMAG0277

Danielle has a good friend who lives two blocks away. They have a traditional stoop and they are in Florida. So Danielle wanted to try sliding down their steps. So we walked to their place.

It was easier walking in the street. Cars were not an issue.

    IMAG0279

As you can see, the cars were a bit buried (that’s the driver side mirror above Danielle’s head).

    IMAG0281

And sliding down the stoop at her friend’s house was good fun.

    IMAG0288

    IMAG0289

While we were playing, people were trying to dig out the cars. The car in the background had apparently been stuck there since about 7am.

    IMAG0294

But that just meant that you could play with a snow fort in the street.

A great snow day in Brooklyn. Back to work tomorrow…

  • Flower Girl Wedding

I’m so overdue for blogging. Here’s the recent wedding story.

We went to Chicago for my niece’s wedding. My daughters were both flower girls. And it was their first wedding. So lots of excitement.

It was a nice weekend in Chicago (for November). The wedding was downtown. So that afternoon we walked around and ended up by Lake Michigan on the beach. We were pretty much the only ones there, but the girls still loved it.

    DSC03122DSC03126

Then it was back to the hotel to get ready.

    DSC03134

The room where we waited before the wedding had a pool table that for some reason was not in use. My girls changed that.DSC03135

    DSC03137

The wedding was a nice one and a short one, which was good for the girls. But Danielle was fascinated by the whole thing. Following the ceremony there was a cocktail hour while they switched over the room for the reception. My girls managed to discover this couch which was very slippery. With a running start they could slide on their stomachs the whole way across.

     DSC03154

    DSC03155

Finally there was dancing. The DJ hit a long stretch playing music they both knew so they danced a lot.

    DSC03190

After a lot of dancing, the DJ played a slow song. This annoyed the girls and Elly and I danced together. By this point Tori was so tired that she literally toppled over on the floor.

    A really fun night.

  • Busy, Busy, Busy

Work is busy and life is busy. Origami is selling well (even I can sell Origami – I’m 2-0 on sales calls), our clients are happy and my family is hitting the busy season.

So far I owe a posting for Halloween (a witch and Princess Tiana for Danielle and Tori, respectively). Danielle’s 8th birthday is tomorrow, but her party is postponed for an extra week because my niece is getting married in Chicago this weekend and the girls are flower girls in the wedding. So wedding this weekend, Danielle’s party next weekend and then Tori turns 4 the weekend after that.

Oh yeah, my birthday will be completely forgotten somewhere in the middle there.

Then Thanksgiving and then the crazy holidays. And during this we have to implement a ton of new clients. But that’s a good problem to have.

So if I’m a bit slow to blog, you’ll understand…
